うったて
本誌は文学創造都市おかやまから届ける「ちいさな物語」マガジンです。2023年、岡山市がユネスコ創造都市ネットワークの文学分野に国内で初めて加盟したことを背景に、文学によるまちづくりを内外へ発信するために創刊されました。タイトルの「うったて」は、岡山の方言で書道の“起筆”を意味し、ものごとのはじまりや心構えとしても用いられる言葉です。日々の暮らし、人々のいとなみ……、まちにあふれる物語に耳を傾け、拾い集め、見つめ直し、冊子として残していくローカルマガジンです。
タイトルロゴは、象徴的な“うったて”をそのままマークにし、さらに“うったて”を強調したロゴタイプと合わせて、意味を知らなくても雰囲気を感じられ、不思議と惹かれるものにしました。
デザインでは、行政のPR誌でありながら市民が気軽に参加できる編集スタイルやまちの小さな声をすくい上げる文学的な姿勢を大切にしつつ、冊子の“うったて”である表紙や扉や巻頭記事を文学創造都市おかやまの入口として目をひき手に取ってもらえるよう心がけています。

This publication is a “small stories” magazine from Okayama, a UNESCO Creative City of Literature. It was launched in 2023, following Okayama City’s designation as the first city in Japan to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of Literature, as a way to share its literary approach to city-making both within and beyond the region. The title “Uttate” is an Okayama dialect word meaning the first stroke in calligraphy, and is also used to describe the beginning of something or one’s attitude when setting out. It is a local magazine that listens to, gathers, reconsiders, and preserves in print the stories found throughout the city—in everyday life, in people’s activities, and in the small details of local life.
The title logo turns the symbolic act of “uttate” itself into a mark. Combined with a logotype that further emphasizes this first stroke, it was designed to convey its atmosphere even to those unfamiliar with the meaning of the word—something quietly intriguing and strangely captivating. In the overall design, I valued the magazine’s position as a public relations publication produced by the city, while also embracing its open editorial style that allows citizens to participate casually, and its literary attitude of drawing out the small voices of the city. At the same time, I treated the cover, opening pages, and lead article as the magazine’s own “uttate”—the first stroke—and designed them as an inviting entrance into Okayama, Creative City of Literature, with the aim of catching the eye and encouraging people to pick up the publication.
